Hi, I'm Vicki, I am 52 years strong and hopeful. I live in Kansas City, Missouri. Mother of two honorable sons, who have each blessed me with a grandchild, and I am living my life with Scleroderma in it.
I was diagnosed in 2001 with Lupus and Raynauds. Handled both fairly well until 4 years ago. Symptoms changed, new ones appeared and I had no answers for my suffering. It appears that I am a collector of Auto-immune diseases. After many office visits, hospital stays and prayers, the diagnosis is in. Systemic Scleroderma.
I take responsibility for my health and wellness and now participate fully in all its aspects. I will never again leave any decision up to a doctor but will be a partner in this journey. I know that I would not be here were it not for the protocol. This disease is an angry, unforgiving one.
I promise to try and handle this new chapter in my life with dignity, grace and comic relief!
Please share this site with anyone interested. If only one person takes action to fight this disease as a result of my ramblings, it's worth the time and effort!
Caring Bridge is a Website dedicated to connecting patients & their families throughout their ordeals with Scleroderma.

Mary Witthar, is the Treasurer of Hope-Promise-Support Foundation for Scleroderma. This Foundation is established to provide the right to live fuller lives by awarding grants to patients and families in need as well as focusing on public awareness.
Mary's career began prior to leaving high school as Senior Class Treasurer. Now she has over 35 years in the accounting industry. Mary brings a lot of knowledge to this board with plenty of on-going enthusiasm. Her current role and expertise, as Senior Accountant at DST Systems, Inc., provides many facets and assets in direction of financial affairs for the growth of this amazing foundation.
Another one of many reasons for Mary joining this foundations board, is her devoted love as an avid care giver and support for others in need, as Vicki Brown, one great friend, has truly touched her heart. Mary being able to provide smiles and hope for individuals with medical concerns is a major part and self gratification of her everyday life. Mary looks forward to inspiring growth potentials for Hope-Promise-Support as the treasurer of a great Team.
Rose Whitsitt, is the Secretary of Hope - Promise - Support Foundation for Scleroderma. This Foundation is established to provide the right to live fuller lives by awarding grants to patients and families in need as well as focusing on public awareness.
Rose’s career with Nonprofit organizations began 15 years ago when she was hired by a law firm that specializes in Nonprofit law. She brings knowledge to this board on the registration and legal aspects of a nonprofit.
Rose has assisted with several Nonprofit organizations in fundraising events, etc, but, not until the founder, Vicki Brown, approached her about helping to form this wonderful foundation, did she know why she only volunteered when needed. She is extremely excited to help her great friend Vicki, make Hope - Promise - Support Foundation for Scleroderma a foundation that will be known, Nationwide.
What is Scleroderma?
Scleroderma is a debilitating and too often fatal auto-immune disease that affects 300,000 people across our country. Scleroderma itself means "hard skin". The hardness is caused by increased production of collagen and other proteins that cause skin thickening and replaces normal skin structure with scar tissue. Scleroderma can be a devastating disease and the same thickening process may occur in the blood vessels, the lungs, the kidneys, the intestinal tract and other key organs.
Research over the last two decades has led to improved treatment for scleroderma and has improved both survival and function for individuals with this disease. While this improvement is welcome, the fact is there is no cure and individuals continue to be disabled and die from the disease.
Those with widespread skin and organ involvement have a negative prognosis with life expectancy 5-10 years after diagnosis.
Scleroderma causes life to be a daily struggle to cope with because it can be extremely painful, both physically and mentally. There is no cure for Scleroderma. The medicines that are prescribed are simply used to treat the symptoms and improve the individual’s quality of life.

The diagnosis, although difficult to hear at the time, was a relief, I finally had an answer. The emotional difficulties are in the waiting, anxiety, anger and fear of the unknown.
The diagnosis: SCLERODERMA (sklere-o-DUR-muh)
One of our own, Vicki Brown, was diagnosed with Scleroderma
in March of this year and has since had to stop working because of this horrible disease.
Earlier this year, she started a foundation called Hope-
Promise-Support Foundation for Scleroderma. Unlike the national
foundation that funds research, her foundation supports individuals that may need a little help to travel to Mayo, that may need help paying an electric bill or for medication they just can’t afford.
On November 17, the foundation hosted a Bingo fundraiser at
Hamburger Mary'’s located on Southwest Boulevard...
